Think All River Cruises Are the Same? They Really Aren’t

Two ships can sail the same stretch of the Danube and deliver surprisingly different holidays.

One might suit someone who wants almost everything included and organised. Another may be perfect if you want more freedom, active excursions or time to wander off and explore by yourself.

That’s why I don’t think choosing a river cruise should start with finding the cheapest sailing.

Avalon, Viking, Scenic, Emerald and Ama Waterways all have their own style. Then there are smaller river vessels and barges that offer something completely different again.

I look at the things that actually affect your holiday: cabin style, food, drinks, excursions, group sizes, atmosphere, what’s included and how much freedom you have once you reach each destination.

The itinerary matters too. A week on the Rhine is a very different experience from Portugal’s Douro, France’s Rhône or a longer journey along the Danube.

And sometimes the best trip isn’t just the cruise. A few nights somewhere before you board or an independent stay afterwards can turn a seven-night sailing into a much more interesting European holiday.

There isn’t one “best” river cruise line.

There’s the one that’s right for the way you like to travel.
